About Lisbon / Lisboa

Sprawling beautifully along the right bank of the Tagus River Estuary, Lisbon proudly faces the Atlantic Ocean.
Legend has it that Lisbon was founded by the Greek Odysseus during his journey to the Odyssey. We cannot verify whether this is correct. What is certain; that Lisbon was founded as a trading post by the Phoenicians in the twelfth century BC.

Castelo de São Jorge

Lisbon and most of present-day Portugal were part of the Roman Empire. From the second century BC until the Roman Empire fell apart. Later, Lisbon belonged to the Moorish Empire. With the help of Crusaders in the twelfth century, the city was conquered by Alfonso I of Portugal. After the conquest, the king had the Castelo de São Jorge built to protect the city from enemy attacks.

A major event in the history of Lisbon is the great earthquake of 1755. During this earthquake, a large part of the city was destroyed and entire parts of the city became uninhabitable. In the years that followed, the city was rebuilt stone by stone, although many historic buildings have been lost forever.

Some of the most popular sights in Lisbon survived this earthquake and can be visited this day. In other places, large squares have arisen, making Lisbon sometimes feel very spacious. Lisbon is a patchwork of different and colorful neighborhoods, such as Baixa, Chiado, Alfama, Bairro Alto: take up the challenge of discovering Lisbon on foot or take the famous old yellow tram!

Lisbon is one of Europe’s smallest capital cities but considered by many visitors to be one of the most likable. Spread over a string of seven hills, the city offers a variety of faces, including a refreshing no-frills simplicity reflected in the people as they go unhurriedly through their day enjoying a hearty and delicious cuisine accompanied by the country’s excellent wines.

Reminiscent of London and New York Town Houses, Valverde Hotel has a classic and elegant language, punctuated by contemporary furniture, works of art, objects, and antiques. It is these pieces, the light, the comfort of the fabrics and materials used, and the treatment of the space as if it were a residence, which intends to distinguish this from all other hotels that may exist in the surroundings, creating a unique place, like an “Oasis of comfort and discreet luxury”.

The Valverde Hotel welcomes leisure and cruise lovers, offering a space in a kind of enlarged house, with a deeply intimate atmosphere. Adjacent to the Restaurant and Bar, you will find a very cool environment. With its different-sized windows and its garden, the “Pateo” is a perfect place for reading, relaxing, or having a private conversation. The black background is broken by terracotta pots and varied furniture with colorful fabrics. In this idyllic space where you can enjoy a food and beverage service, a “classics” menu is available all day. For those who prefer lighter and outdoor dining. It also provides a “Five o’clock Tea” and Cocktails service, which is very popular with guests.

Space is the new luxury

Palácio Príncipe Real opens its doors and welcomes guests to a luxury palácio, located in the heart of Lisbon’s trendy Príncipe Real and with a large garden, heated swimming pool, and yoga rooms. All of the bedrooms give guests a flavor of times gone by when life was lived at a slower pace. Times when afternoon tea was enjoyed in the drawing-room or garden.

Built in 1877, the Palácio was enjoyed and loved by the Lisbon Teixeira da Mota family. The Lisbon society still speaks fondly of parties hosted there. When the current owners were introduced to the building in 2014, they immediately fell in love with the building and the garden and dreamed of recreating the decadent luxury of days gone by with all of the comforts of modern life.

The Garden is an oasis in the center of the city. Your bedroom comes with a SMEG fridge filled with little treats and they can serve breakfast in your room. Surely they can serve your breakfast on the terrace, or even by the pool. Lisbon is blessed with its climate. Even in February, you could be sitting in the sunshine with your freshly ground coffee.

A bridge between modernity and the past in the historic center of Lisbon

The blue façade of the Heritage Avenida Liberdade stands out in an architectonic unit on the prime artery of the capital – Avenida da Liberdade. Subject to careful rehabilitation, this 18th-century building has come back to life by dint of a project of a unique nature.

Designed by Miguel Câncio Martins – whose interventions in the most cosmopolitan capitals are surprising for their daring and creativeness – the authorship of this rebuilding is expressed by the diluting of the physical frontiers between the city and the hotel.

The purpose of the rehabilitation was to keep as many original elements as possible: the 18th-century façade, the ashlar, the veranda railings, the wooden main door, and the shutters with their original ironwork, as well as the Pombaline tiles in the interior, have been subject to detailed restoration. In the exterior, the integrality of the architectonic design was conserved, maintaining the elegant features which characterize the Pombaline age.

A bridge between modernity and the past. Its 42 personalized rooms are equipped with air-conditioning, a free safe, satellite TV, free access to broadband wireless and LCD TV, DVD/CD reader. Also lovely Molton Brown amenities, hairdryer, and bathrobes.

As for the sister hotels of Lisbon Heritage Collection, Heritage Avenida Liberdade Hotel provides it all. Assisted breakfast buffet, library, lobby bar, a Fitness room with a Jet Pool and a Gym, 24h room service, laundry, free access to broadband wireless, free use of a computer and printer with internet access, and a video library. A hotel designated for non-smokers.
