Embrace the beauty of Waikiki at the Pink Palace

Sandy L: “The Royal Hawaiian is wonderful!”.

Stephen C.: “What defines a reasonable price? If you want to understand Waikiki stay at the Sheraton – it’s inexpensive and right in the middle of everything / nice hotel but not going to get you talking about why you were there – the Halekulani is a great hotel. – and a tower room at The Royal, Pink Palace is a special treat.”

Opened in 1927 and known as the “Pink Palace of the Pacific,” The Royal Hawaiian, a Luxury Collection Resort, Waikiki is an oasis of timeless luxury on the island of Oahu. Modern yet indigenous, the resort offers unprecedented amenities, refined accommodations, and exclusive services – all designed to provide our guests with a 5-star experience while visiting Honolulu. From exquisite accommodations in the landmark Historic Wing and the magnificent Mailani Tower to world-class dining, the 528-room resort embodies the allure of Hawaii’s inimitable spirit and rich culture. Embark on an enticing epicurean journey in our award-winning Azure Restaurant, the original Mai Tai Bar, the Royal Hawaiian Bakery, and A Royal Hawaiian Luau – Aha Aina, Waikiki’s only oceanfront luau. The intimate Malulani Pool and private beach area both feature pink-hued umbrellas, matching the resort’s signature color.

Long before Waikiki Beach became the buzzing metropolis that it is, a fantastic pink stucco Moorish-style palace was erected on these famous shores. Now entering its tenth decade, the Royal Hawaiian Hotel offers a taste of a bygone era in Honolulu’s history, a trip back in time to the days when a trip to Hawaii was the last word in the far-flung tropical adventure.

It’s fresh off a renovation that’s brought the guest rooms up to date while leaving public spaces as elegant as they were in the Twenties, which means that while the atmosphere is still transformative, the comforts are as familiar as can be. The rooms in the Mailani Tower are necessarily a bit more on the contemporary side, while those in the Historic Building dive a little deeper into the hotel’s stylistic heritage — and no matter which style you prefer, they’re five-star through and through.

The same goes for the rest of the Royal Hawaiian’s facilities. The Abhasa Spa’s treatment cabins are scattered throughout a lush garden, the pool is fringed with private cabanas, and the restaurants range from top-shelf fine dining to a bakery serving Hawaiian twists on traditional pastries. And you’ve got all the attractions of the Pacific Ocean at your feet as well, from stand-up paddling and surfing lessons to sailing excursions and submarine tours.

Hawaii’s Finest Iconic Hotel

Lin S.: “Halekalani in Waikiki is fantastic!”

Stephen C.: “What defines a reasonable price? If you want to understand Waikiki stay at the Sheraton – it’s inexpensive and right in the middle of everything / nice hotel but not going to get you talking about why you were there – the Halekulani is a great hotel. – and a tower room at the Pink Palace is a special treat.”

Hawaii’s Finest Iconic Hotel To Reopen October 1, 2021, Following A Comprehensive Renewal

As one of the first and finest hotels in Hawaii, Halekulani is located by the freshwater springs that give Waikiki its name.

Halekulani is a cherished blend of place and space, an oasis-like experience amid the energy of Waikiki. With the beachfront location and unobstructed views of Diamond Head, Halekulani is the sought-after destination for those wishing to honeymoon in Hawaii.

At 453 rooms it’s not small. But once you’ve settled on Waikiki Beach as a destination it’s clear that you’ve decided to forget about secondary concerns like secrecy, exclusivity, hipness, and the like, and simply focus on pleasure. And at that point, you could do a whole lot worse than Halekulani.

After all, Hawaii is nothing if not accessible — there’s something to be said for the romance of an arduous journey but there’s also something to be said for maximizing your beach time. And Halekulani does a very fine job of modulating the hustle and bustle of what can be a very busy location.

It’s got 5 acres of prime beachfront all to itself, and a recent renovation leaves it looking fairly sharp — in conservative creams and whites, with traditional rattan furnishings, but with views like these (and most rooms face the sea) there’s plenty to look at. For an added dose of style, you can always book the Vera Wang Suite, down by the water’s edge.

The upside to a resort of Halekulani’s size is that it’s completely self-sufficient. With two pools, three restaurants, and a spa and fitness center, it’s got all the bases covered — plus a charmingly old-fashioned shopping arcade.

LAID-BACK MODERN ALOHA

From the handcrafted, mid-century-inspired coffee tables to the carefully curated artwork sourced from local artists to the historical nods woven into each room, the heritage of Waikiki comes to life in every room at the Surfjack.

Surfjack Hotel & Swim Club is the better part of a mile from Waikiki Beach itself, but in truth, if you’ve spent much time here you’ll be grateful for this slight removal. This side of Waikiki goes easier on the theme-park vibes and feels more like a proper neighborhood, which is great news for a hotel like Surfjack, which is as much about local color and culture as it is about the sun, sand, and surf.

It’s apparent at a glance that this is no half-baked island kitsch — Surfjack is authentically stylish, and every detail, from the décor to the staff uniforms, feels perfectly measured. There’s a mid-century flavor, but it’s a thoughtful one and feels tailored to the building’s history rather than carelessly applied after a late-night Mad Men binge.

The rooms stop short of five-star luxury but they’re more than comfortable enough, and feel, from the inside, uncannily like beachside bungalows. Works by local artists and photographers abound, and activities include meditation, Pilates, and loaner bikes for getting around town. There’s also Olive & Oliver, a boutique specializing in clothing and accessories, with an in-house coffee bar; Mahina & Sun’s, meanwhile, serves modern island cuisine under the guidance of Ed Kenney, a highly regarded local chef.

Where the city melts into the sand

It’s a Shore thing. This place where the city melts into the sand, and you’re at the center of it all. At Shoreline Waikiki, the Aloha spirit is ready to play. From the rooftop pool to sunset sips. AM wave-riding. PM mingles with Honolulu’s makers and doers. And swimming in neon after-dark. Beachy dreams are going electric. Are you ready to plugin?

First, a disclaimer: the Shoreline Hotel Waikiki is not, strictly speaking, located on the shoreline, but a few minutes’ strolls from the beach. What you get in return for that quick stroll is a hotel with an indie vibe and a relatively small scale. This is Waikiki, home of massive resorts, chain restaurants, and discount clothing shops. By local standards, a hotel with 125 rooms is practically a bed-and-breakfast; intimate, stylish, and eco-conscious, the Shoreline excels at trading bloat for island beauty.

You don’t need a 24-hour fitness center with complimentary personal trainers? You don’t need a kids’ club, or seven onsite restaurants or a staff member to spray mineral water over your body as you lie by the pool? Perfect: the Shoreline is just the ticket, and you save on the resort fees that the rest of Honolulu’s hotels pile on. Guest rooms are simple and bright, outfitted in white and natural wood, mixing modern decor and retro-inspired details like Wegner wingback chairs. Amenities include flat-screen LCD TVs and free wi-fi; bathrooms have marble countertops and oversized showers.

There’s a small swimming pool on the rooftop, and a singular dining and drinking venue, the rustic-chic Heavenly Island Lifestyle café, on the ground level. It’s open all day, so you can drop in for coffee or drinks on your way to and from the beach. And the beach, of course, is why you’re really here. The Shoreline Hotel Honolulu, it goes without saying, doesn’t have its own private beach club. But they’re more than happy to lend you a towel and point you in the right direction.

Step back in time to the elegance of 1960’s Hawaii at The Laylow, Autograph Collection.

Perfectly designed with a mid-century modern aesthetic set in a lush garden, this Waikiki hotel offers guests a classic Hawaii experience. Relax in spacious guest rooms that blend authentic décor with modern amenities, including king-sized beds, complimentary Wi-Fi, and relaxing lanais. Spend time in the sunshine at the inviting saltwater pool, featuring lush greenery, lounge seating, teak accents, and pampering touches such as complimentary shaved ice to keep you cool. Hideout is The Laylow’s signature restaurant that serves Modern Hapa Hawaiian cuisine made with the freshest ingredients from the ocean and local farms where you can enjoy a wide selection of artisan cocktails and Hawaii craft beers on an open-air lanai (terrace) with two spacious fire pits. Entertainment is provided by island musicians who perform nightly.

When a hotel goes so far as to call itself The Laylow, there’s no mistaking what kind of vibe they’re aiming for. This one leans hard into Waikiki’s mid-century heritage, evoking the glamour of the era when Hawaii was just about as exotic an escape as most Americans could ever hope to see. And for all its throwback modernist good looks, it’s perhaps somewhat surprising that it’s no small-batch boutique, but a member of Marriott’s Autograph Collection.

Though quite central, it’s set back a couple of streets from Waikiki Beach itself, which really does help with the whole “lay low” thing — you’re close enough to the heart of the action to join in more or less at will, but you’ve also got just a measure of seclusion. The rooms and suites are a perfect blend of utopian modernism and tasteful tropical charm, and if they’re not exactly ostentatious, they are quietly luxurious.

Hideout is the restaurant, and it’s devoted to a similarly clubby atmosphere; unlike many hotel restaurants it’s a valid option for locals as well, serving contemporary Pacific Rim cuisine in a low-lying rooftop space. And with a pool that comes complete with half-submerged chaises, you just might find yourself hiding out instead of venturing to the beach.

set on a pristine white sand beach

The Kahala Hotel & Resort is a luxury resort located on the island of Oahu in Honolulu’s exclusive residential area of Kahala. The resort unveils itself at the end of Kahala Avenue set on a pristine white sand beach, just ten minutes from the world-class shopping and entertainment of Waikiki.

In January 1964, the Kahala opened its doors on prime beachfront next to the famous Waialae Country Club private golf course. The rest is history, with five decades worth of illustrious guests, from royalty to heads of state and Hollywood stars.
Inspired by the great homes of the Hawaiian monarchy, with its elegant and grand residential feel, the hotel was originally designed by architects Edward Killingsworth, Jules Brady, and Waugh Smith of Long Beach, California.

Then known as the Kahala Hilton, the resort cost $12 million to build and was the first major resort to have air-conditioning in all rooms.

In a few months, the resort capitalized on its relatively removed location, thanks to its entrée to the Hollywood community. Not long after the resort’s opening, the management of NBC booked every room for its annual affiliates meeting and brought in a bevy of Hollywood stars.

The Kahala resort attracted countless film and television stars with its exclusive setting, exemplary service, and regard for privacy. Weekend afternoons around the pool were veritable who’s who of the silver screen, with the likes of John Wayne and Frank Sinatra lounging in chaise lounges with sunglasses and cool drinks.

The Kahala also became the hotel for royalty, heads of state, and legends of the sporting, musical, and literary worlds. Despite its reputation for attracting the rich and famous, the resort also became a legendary gathering place for Honolulu’s local society.

In the last decade, the Kahala Hotel & Resort has become a member of The Leading Hotels of the World and continues the privileged position among celebrities and islanders.
